BLACK SWAMP BIRD OBSERVATORY'S 17th ANNUAL BANQUET & CELEBRATION
Butterflies & Birds:
A Celebration of Nature

September 17, 18, & 19, 2010
Port Clinton, Ohio
Click here for Banquet Celebration details and registration information.

We are extremely proud to feature Robert Michael Pyle as our keynote speaker. Widely hailed as "the father of butterfly-watching," Pyle founded the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, began the summer butterfly counts that have become so popular, and wrote the first true field guide to butterflies of North America. However, he is better known as a superb general naturalist and one of the world's finest nature writers. Author of more than a dozen books and hundreds of magazine essays, he has won legions of readers with his astute observations and lyrical prose style, and he excels as a master story teller in person as well. Bob's newest book, Mariposa Road, will be hot off the presses in September—please join us and be among the first to hear of his adventures in travel!

Black-and-white Warbler

Black-and-white Warbler
Alpha Code: BAWW

Connecticut Warbler
Alpha Code: CONW

What would you have called this on the Boardwalk last spring? What appears to be a partial melanistic Black-and-white Warbler was captured 26 June while running the Navarre Banding Station BBS program. DNA analysis is now being conducted by the Ohio State University biological department. More details and photos will be reported on the BSBO Bird Bander Blog.

Try to sort this out! This full breeding condition female Connecticut Warbler was captured 25 July at the Navarre Banding Station during BBS field work. The bird was in heavy molt as you can see. The closest known breeding population would be the upper portions of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Additional photos and  more detailed discussion of possible scenarios for this potential first July record for Ohio will be posted to the BSBO Bander’s Blog.

What is an alpha code?
Alphabetic (“alpha”) codes, abbreviations of English or scientific bird names, have long been employed by ornithologists. They allow quicker data entry than filling out the full English or scientific name of a species and they can also serve to cross-check other recorded names or numeric data. The U.S. Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL) has long used alpha codes in banding data, and these codes have become an integral part of large ornithological programs across Canada and the United States.
